China Hepatitis C Elimination Project Training held in Yangjiang

      The training session of China Hepatitis C Elimination Alliance Public Welfare Project was successfully held in Yangjiang, Guangdong province, on September 6, 2020. It was hosted by China Liver Health and Yangjiang Public Health Hospital, with support from Guangdong Provincial Committee of Chinese Peasants and Workers Democratic Party (CPWDP) and Yangjiang Municipal Health Commission.

Chen Xinbin, chief of the disease control and prevention section of Yangjiang Municipal Health Commission, and Yao Zhenggang, vice president of Yangjiang Public Health Hospital, presided over the meeting.

      A total of 212 medical workers from Yangjiang Public Health Hospital, Yangjiang People's Hospital, Yangjiang Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Yangjiang Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital, Yangjiang Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, as well as hospitals, community health service centers and township health centers in the High-tech district, Jiangcheng district, Yangdong district, Yangchun city, Yangxi county and other places under the jurisdiction of Yangjiang city participated in the training.

      Liu Qide, deputy chairman of Guangdong Provincial Committee of CPWDP, delivered a speech and noted that, despite causing great harm, hepatitis C can be completely cured. At present, a variety of drugs have been included in the medical insurance catalog with their prices slashed significantly. In addition, China Hepatitis C Elimination Alliance Public Welfare Project has established an effective working mode for eliminating hepatitis C. It is expected that, under the guidance and support of Yangjiang municipal government and local health commission, experts and colleagues from all walks of life will contribute their experience and wisdom and gather available forces and resources to find a way of curing the disease.

      Wu Yekun, deputy chairman of Yangjiang Municipal Committee of CPPCC and chairman of Yangjiang Municipal Committee of CPWDP, said that the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020 reminded us of the need to be alert to the large-scale occurrence and spread of infectious diseases. Yangjiang government attaches great importance to healthcare and has made efforts in eliminating viral hepatitis. Good performance in the prevention and treatment of hepatitis C now will greatly reduce the risk of liver cirrhosis, liver failure, and liver cancer in the future, thus reducing the healthcare burden of local families and the society and producing huge economic benefits.

      Huang Haoxin, deputy director of Yangjiang Municipal Health Commission, said that viral hepatitis prevention and treatment was one of the key tasks in the health field in Yangjiang. The China Hepatitis C Elimination Alliance Public Welfare Project brings guidance and supports from national authoritative experts, and in cooperation with local medical institutions, will promote health education, screening and testing, treatment for hepatitis C and provide assistance for the extremely poor patients. He requests relevant medical institutions in Yangjiang to attach great importance to the project, assign people to take charge of communication and exchange and provide active cooperation in implementing the project, so as to realize the goal of eliminating hepatitis C in Yangjiang as soon as possible and benefit local people.

      Director Li Mingyang conferred the plaque of Base Hospital of China Hepatitis C Elimination Alliance Public Welfare Project to Yangjiang Public Health Hospital, and awarded the appointment letter of member of national Liver health promotion expert committee to director Chen Xing and director Luo Xianxin from Yangjiang Public Health Hospital.

      During the training session, secretary Liu Zhongfu from National Center for AIDS/STD Control and Prevention under China CDC, professor Feng Bo from Peking University People's Hospital, and professor Gao Wenjun from Zhongshan Second People's Hospital interpreted the situation of hepatitis C prevention and control in China, hepatitis C control guideline and hepatitis C elimination strategies respectively. Yang Fang, deputy director of Guangdong Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and Chen Xing, director of Yangjiang Public Health Hospital, respectively introduced the situation of hepatitis C prevention and treatment as well as the strategies to eliminate hepatitis C in Guangdong and Yangjiang. 


      Yangjiang Public Health Hospital is the main organization implementing the China Hepatitis C Elimination Alliance Public Welfare Project in Yangjiang. In the speech, Fu Zhuo, president of Yangjiang Public Health Hospital, said that residents in some areas of Yangjiang are still facing the threat of hepatitis C due to historical reasons, and many patients have not yet received standardized diagnosis and treatment. The China Hepatitis C Elimination Alliance Public Welfare Project invites Yangjiang Public Health Hospital to cooperate, which not only affirms the ability of the hospital, but will also promote hepatitis C treatment to a new level. All medical staff will attach great importance to the project, make joint efforts with relevant departments and other medical institutions, actively publicize and carefully organize activities so as to ensure the high quality of hepatitis C screening, diagnosis and treatment, and contribute to eliminating hepatitis C in Yangjiang and the whole country.
      Li Mingyang, director of China Liver Health, introduced the arrangements of China Hepatitis C Elimination Alliance Public Welfare Project. Launched in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing in 2017, the project is committed to carrying out a series of large-scale public welfare activities under the guidance of the Ministry of Civil Affairs, Bureau of Disease Prevention and Control under National Health Commission and Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. With academician Zhuang Hui serving as the general counsel and professor Wei Lai as the chief expert, it aims to promote hepatitis C screening and testing and standardizing diagnosis and treatment in China, facilitate the realization of the goal of eliminating viral hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030 put forward by World Health Organization, and contribute to building Healthy China.
      Director Li Mingyang extended thanks to Guangdong provincial committee and Yangjiang municipal committee of CPWDP as well as Guangdong and Yangjiang CDCs and Yangjiang Medical Association for their strong support. He said that the project, under the guidance of local health commission and relying on medical insurance policy for hepatitis C, would conduct in-depth cooperation with local medical institutions and medical workers at all levels, actively invest experts and resources, and provide strong support for hepatitis C prevention and treatment education in communities and for high-risk group in screening and testing so as to contribute to eliminating hepatitis C in Yangjiang.
