March 18, 2022 is the 22nd National Liver Day. The theme of this year's campaign is "Universal Participation, Active Screening, Standardized Treatment, Cure Hepatitis".

How can a mother-to-be with hepatitis B infection stop mother-to-child transmission of the virus and have a healthy baby? What are the high-risk factors for liver cancer and how far away is liver cancer from us? Why fatty liver must be actively prevented, and proactively intervened and which conditions need to be treated?

On the evening of the 18th, from 20-21pm, Li Mingyang, Director of the China Liver Health, hosted the above questions on Baidu Live with researcher Zhang Wei from the China CDC, Professor Liu Min from the School of Public Health of Peking University and Professor Rao Huiying from the Institute of Liver Diseases of Peking University.

Researcher Zhang Wei introduced the early prevention and treatment of liver cancer. China accounts for more than half of the world's liver cancer incidence, and as there are no typical symptoms of early liver cancer, 70% of liver cancer patients are already in the middle to late stages when diagnosed, with an overall 5-year survival rate of less than 20%. The key to staying away from liver cancer is to do a good job of preventing and treating various types of hepatitis such as hepatitis B and C, and to eliminate harmful substances such as aflatoxin.

Professor Liu Min explains in detail the importance and effectiveness of neonatal immunization against hepatitis B and mother-to-child interruption of hepatitis B. The WHO recommends that all infants be vaccinated against hepatitis B as early as possible after birth, preferably within 24 hours. A second or third dose of hepatitis B vaccine should then be given at least four weeks apart to complete the full vaccination schedule. Timely administration of birth doses of vaccine is an effective measure to reduce mother-to-child transmission of HBV. One study showed that hepatitis B vaccination was effective in up to 95.6% (86.1%-98.6%) of children born to HIBsAg-positive HBAg-negative mothers, and that hepatitis B vaccination was effective in reducing the probability of mother-to-child transmission of HBV by 72% (60%-80%) compared to the placebo or no-intervention groups.

Professor Rao Huiying points out that fatty liver is a hidden killer of liver disease. Once you know you have fatty liver, the first step is to go to the hospital to have your condition assessed by a medical professional. For simple fatty liver, good results can be achieved through diet control and exercise. For fatty liver with liver function abnormalities, liver protection and anti-inflammatory treatment are needed in addition to a controlled diet and exercise.

More than 4,200 netizens   from across the country participated in the live interaction, a large proportion of whom were medical and health workers from grassroots township health centers and community health service centers engaged in immunization planning and public health education.
