 Promote testing and standardized treatment for hepatitis C, and create a community model for hepatitis C elimination The Tianjin Hepatitis C Elimination Community Action, jointly hosted by China Liver Health and Chinese Foundation for Hepatitis Prevention and Control and co-organized by Tianjin Second People’s Hospital and the Association for Science and Technology of Xuefu Street, Tianjin Nankai District, was launched at Xuefu street, Nankai district, on July 18, 2019. Leaders from Nankai District Center for Disease Control and Prevention and relevant government departments of Nankai district, Prof. Lu Chengzhen from hepatitis C department of Tianjin Second People's Hospital, deputy director Shen Yingsheng from China Liver Health as well as heads of 14 neighborhood committees under the jurisdiction of Xuefu street and project volunteers attended the launch event. This event aims to promote the achievement of the World Health Organization's goal of eliminating viral hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030 and the implementation of the National Viral Hepatitis Prevention and Control Plan (2017-2020). Based on the medical insurance policy for hepatitis C patients in Tianjin, this action will carry out science popularization and free testing for the public and provide supports for high-risk population in active testing, timely treatment and early recovery, so as to summarize the work pattern of hepatitis C elimination in grassroots communities and promote the sustained and rapid progress in eliminating hepatitis C in China.   The Xuefu Street Association for Science and Technology extended warm congratulations on the launching of the project. There are two well-known institutions of higher education at Xuefu Street, i.e.Nankai University and Tianjin University, with profound cultural atmosphere. With active cooperation and great support from 90,000 residents on the street, the Tianjin Hepatitis C Elimination Community Action will promote the elimination of hepatitis C and, at the same time, improve the scope and depth of all kinds of science popularization, and comprehensively improve health literacy and health level of the residents. Prof. Lu Chengzhen from Tianjin Second People's hospital introduced the harm and prevention of hepatitis C. Hepatitis C is a common infectious disease,which can spread through blood, sexual contact and mother-to-child transmission. There are about 10 million hepatitis C patients in China. Actually, it is no less harmful than the familiar hepatitis B, with insidious onset and no obvious symptoms at the beginning. Therefore, it is often easy to be ignored without timely treatment. As the disease progresses quietly, it can cause liver cirrhosis, liver ascites, liver cancer and other serious diseases. If detected and diagnosed in time, it can be completely cured by oral direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy. Most hepatitis C patients can be completely cured and fully recover within 3-6 months. Better yet, Tianjin has taken the lead in including hepatitis C in the scope of medical insurance reimbursement, covering urban employee basic medical insurance, urban resident basic medical insurance and the new cooperative medical scheme, so that patients with various genotypes of HCV will have easy access to treatment without worrying about financial problems.
