Targeted Medical Assistance Campaign Launched in Dafang county, Guizhou province

Co-sponsored by the Liaoning provincial committee and Beijing committee of the Chinese Peasants and Workers Democratic Party (CPWDP) and China Liver Health, a targeted medical assistance campaign was launched in Dafang county, Guizhou province on Nov 30, 2019. It aimed to help Dafang county further promote the prevention and control of viral hepatitis and other infectious diseases and improve the diagnosis and treatment level of local medical institutions.

In the morning, a training session on liver health promotion was held at the Peope’s Hospital of Dafang County. Leaders from the Liaoning provincial committee and Beijing committee of CPWDP, the government of Dafang county, the united front work department of the county party committee, the health commission and the center for disease control and prevention of Dafang county as well as healthcare workers from 61 hospitals and township health centers in Dafang county attended the meeting.

Deputy county head Zhou Dengyin notes in his speech that the mission of Health for All can’t be reached if people are not healthy. The overall quality of healthcare system in Dafang county is not high, with relatively poor health service in rural ares, backward life concepts, and weak health awareness and health literacy in the public. The training session on liver health promotion will play an important role in promoting health awareness and developing good hygiene habits in the public, and will also be conducive to implementing poverty alleviation in healthcare. He required healthcare workers to master the knowledge and skills in liver disease prevention and treatment and emergency services in public health, carry out liver disease prevention and health education, guide the public to establish healthy concepts and master health knowledge so as to improve people's awareness in liver health, promote prevention and standardize treatment for liver diseases, relieve the threat of liver disease, promote liver health work to a new level and contribute to implementing poverty alleviation in healthcare.

Zhu Hang, the deputy chairman and secretary-general of Liaoning provincial committee of CPWDP, quoted a saying: if you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together. We should choose projects that accord with local advantages and characteristics, integrate professional talents and resources and make joint efforts to help Dafang county carry out targeted poverty alleviation in healthcare. We will create new synergy and new driving forces to boost social services and build a moderately well-off society in an all-around way, contribute to addressing the historic problem of absolute poverty and jointly promote human development.

Li Yalan, deputy chairman of the Beijing committee of CPWDP, listed the series of work carried out by the Beijing committee to help Duijiang town, Dajiang county, as a fixed-point poverty alleviation unit and affirmed the crucial role played by democratic parties and social organizations in targeted poverty alleviation.

Secretary Liu Zhongfu from the National Center for AIDS/STD Control and Prevention under China CDC interpreted the epidemic status and prevention and control strategy of HIV/AIDS and hepatitis C. There are about 7.6 million people infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) domestically. According to the Global Health Sector Strategy (GHSS) on Viral Hepatitis adopted by the World Health Assembly, China should achieve the goal of 90% of HCV infections being diagnosed and 80% of confirmed cases being treated by 2030. In terms of this goal, healthcare workers in China still have a long way to go.

Prof. Feng Bo from Peking University People's Hospital interpreted the guideline for hepatitis B treatment. Prof. Liu Yali from Beijing YouAn Hospital affiliated to Capital Medical University explained the guideline for hepatitis C treatment. Wu Jiang, director of the immunization and prevention division under Beijing Center for Disease Control and Prevention, gave a lecture titled “Hepatitis B vaccine: the most effective tool for eliminating hepatitis B as a major public health threat”.

By organizing authoritative experts to provide training for primary healthcare workers, China Liver Health hopes that healthcare workers can master and learn from the guideline on liver disease, strengthen the understanding of liver disease diagnosis and treatment, take appropriate treatment options for patients and promote the rational application of drugs in clinical practice so as to improve the cure rate and strengthen the management of adverse reactions.

In the afternoon, deputy chairman Li Yalan, director Li Mingyang, director Dong Ge, director Zhang Youlin, director Ye Feng and other members of the research team went to the health center of Duijiang town, Dafang county, carried out a large-scale targeted medical assistance campaign and provided voluntary clinical services for local poor people.
