A seminar on eliminating viral hepatitis as a public health threat was held in Beijing on the morning of Oct 19, 2020. Yang Zhen, a member of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and vice chairman of the Central Committee of Chinese Peasants and Workers Democratic Party (CPWDP), attended the seminar and delivered a speech. Zhuang Hui, honorary chairman of China Liver Health and academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, made a summary speech. Lu Jing, deputy director of the department of state affairs participation and deliberation, CPWDP, presided over the seminar. Cao Xirong (chairman of China Primary Health Care Foundation), Liu Zhongfu (party secretary of National Center for AIDS/STD Control and Prevention, Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention), Wang Guiqiang (chairman of Society of Infectious Diseases under Chinese Medical Association and director of infection disease department and liver disease center of Peking University First Hospital), Li Mingyang (director of China Liver Health) and Feng Bo from Peking University People's Hospital participated and had discussions around the topic. Yang Zhen noted that, after years of efforts, China had effectively curbed the rising trend of viral hepatitis. However, in terms of achieving the goal of eliminating viral hepatitis as a major public health problem by 2030 put forward by World Health Organization, there is still a long way to go. He called for the establishment of a more effective mechanism for hepatitis screening so as to ensure that key populations could be fully tested on the premise of protecting their privacy. He also suggested relevant health departments develop plans to quickly transfer patients to relevant departments or specialized hospitals for treatment, which could cover the whole process of screening, clinical diagnosis and treatment and public health services. In addition, it was also recommended to draw lessons from health poverty alleviation to include viral hepatitis in the list of serious diseases for centralized treatment. In the comprehensive reform of public hospitals, including the construction of medical consortia at all levels, liver disease should be regarded as an important specialty. Starting from single diseases, top-level design of systems should be strengthened to play an effective role in improving diagnosis and treatment capabilities of medical consortia from top to bottom. Yang Zhen emphasized that it was necessary to promote the formulation of National Viral Hepatitis Prevention and Control Plan (2021-2030). Serving as the guideline for viral hepatitis prevention and control during the 14th five-year period, the Plan will help improve viral hepatitis screening, diagnosis, treatment and prevention to a new and higher level. It is hoped that common efforts can be made to achieve the goal of eliminating viral hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030. Experts from hospitals in Beijing, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Yunnan, Gansu and other regions, leaders of relevant social organizations and representatives of relevant entrepreneurs attended the seminar. |
